Seclusion
Seclusion is defined as the
confinement of a student alone in a closed safe room, where the student can be
monitored. Seclusion should only be used as a last resort if the student’s
behavior is putting him/herself or others at risk. There are some restrictions
to using seclusion. Seclusion should not be longer than 15 minutes for
elementary students and 20 minutes for middle and high school students (MDE,
2006).
Restraint
Restraint is defined as involving direct physical contact to stop the movement of an individual, by holding their limbs, head, or body. Restraint should only be used as a last resort when the student’s behavior is putting him/herself or others at risk. There are some restrictions to using restraint. Physical restraint should not be longer than needed, and should not go over 10 minutes. During the restraint if the student shows signs of physical pain, the school administrator, parent, and medical personal should be notified. Restraint should not be used to affect the students breathing or be used on a student with a documented health problem (MDE, 2006).
When using seclusion or restraint
1) Every time seclusion and restraint is used it must be documented. Parents should be contacted and receive written documentation on the event within 24 hours
(MDE, 2006). |
